Somewhere on the road less traveled

I am a 34 year old who recently retired, sold my home and possessions and bought an RV so I can travel America. Please come along on my adventure by following me here. Enjoy.

Time to make some money...

...which means it's work time. For those who haven't heard about what I am doing let me explain. I am going to be working for the American Crystal Sugar Company during the sugar beet harvest. I will be at a processing site where the beets will be brought from the fields and piled into huge piles. The company pays for a full hookup site in a campground while I am here and pays a pretty decent wage. I will be working 12 hour shifts with no days off unless the weather is bad until the harvest ends which will probably be the middle of October. The first 40 hours is straight time then time and a half after that. All day Saturday is time and a half and Sundays are double time. The harvest starts Saturday and they are projecting three weekends which is great money wise. I am in Grand Forks, North Dakota right now where I finalized my paperwork and watched an orientation video. I will be living in Stephen, Minnesota which is northeast of here and working right outside of that town. I will be heading up there shortly and getting settled into the campground then, since I won't be working till Saturday, hopefully getting out and doing some hiking and such. I have no idea if I will have coverage out there or not but if I do I will get some pictures up as soon as I can. It is nice weather wise right now but the people I talked to today say it is not uncommon for it snow at some point during the harvest. Should be an interesting few weeks. Well I think that's it for now because I want to get on the road but I will get more info up as soon as possible. Take care, Jim

Good luck on the Sugar beet harvest. Found your website from the rv forum younger fulltimes forum. My wife and I worked the harvest last year, and would have returned this year, but we are stuck in Las Vegas on a job. Tell Melissa Todd and Heather said hi.
